Zaltbommel was once a member of the Hanseatic League of towns. The almost undamaged medieval fortifications surrounding the town are well worth seeing. The historic heart of the town is dominated by beautiful houses dating from the 16th and 17th centuries and the Grote Kerk, which was built in 1304 and has a four-storey tower.
