Nordland

by Marco Polo

Relaxation instead of stress.

A small strip of land with an amazingly beautiful island world and hospitable people. At first glance, only a long and small strip of land is visible behind Trondheim – only if you take a closer look, you see one of the most beautiful and versatile regions of Norway. Norway’s most narrow area is located in Nordic Fylke – it’s only 6 km from the end of Tysfjords to the Swedish boarder. There are only two roads to the north: one runs through a densely wooded valley, the other one along the sea. Norway’s arterial road E6 is about 300 km long and runs from Trondheim to the Nordic boarder. It’s another 250 km to the Arctic Circle. On the way there, you first drive along the world famous salmon river Namson, then through the dark Dunderlandsdalen and finally up to the Saltfjell-mountains to the Arctic Circle. Bodø, capital city of Nordic Fylke and gate to the Lofoten, is another 180 km and Narvik around 4 hours away. It’s best to stop here and take in this arctic region which offers not only pure nature but a few surprises too: modern sculptures of international artists are found everywhere in the Nordic region – a landscape gallery. The project ‘Nordic sculptural landscape’ with 33 artworks is another reason to take your time. The Nordic region is home to Knut Hamsun, many characters of the poet and Nobel Prize winner were created here. They live of fish; love their Nordic region – brisk stories and ribald jokes. The residents have a lot of respect for the weather but are not to be suppressed by nature or rulers. It won’t take long until you get to know the cordiality and spontaneity of the people. The small Nordic region is big enough for many vacations. A trip with Hurtigruten along the coast of Helgeland is the start of an intense relation for many. Behind the rubble of the eastern Saltjell Mountains there are tarns, mighty glaciers and enormous, partially accessible grottos. To the north of Fylke, between Bodø and Narvik, you’ll find the country of Knut Hamsun: a paradise on the coast. You should reserve a few days to explore this region. An entire chapter was dedicated to the unique Lafoten in front of the coast. The many other Nordic islands – several are inhabited to this day – can look back on a rich history. Remains of a stone-age settlement were found on the island of Vega which was put on the UNESCO world heritage list recently. If you visit these islands you’ll be received cordially and might be so fascinated from the landscape and atmosphere – a detour might turn into a dream vacation in the Northern Sea.
