A group of islands in the Arctic circle.
"Fishery is still important but it is mainly tourism which brings wealth to this northern archipelago. Even the journey is an adventure. Regardless if you come by ferry or airplane: the majestic Lofot is an eye catcher – an endless number of pinnacle-shaped peaks rising from Vestfjord. In between, there are several fishing villages with fertile fields, small towns and historical treasure troves. To the west of the enormous Vestfjord, the Lofoten archipelago stretches 150 to the north. There are paths to the left and the right of the main street leading to shady bays where you can enjoy the Nordic summer light. The car ferry runs between Bodø and Moskenes (4 hours) and between Skutvik and Svolvær (2 hours). You can take a catamaran (leaves every day at 5:15 pm and arrives at 8:50 pm, no cars!) from Bodø to Svolvær. You can take the ‘European road’ (many bridges and a short ferry ride) from Narvik to Å, the most southern point of the archipelago next to the ferry slot Moskenes and a car ride to all major islands of the Lafoten. If you visit the Lafoten, you should spend a night in a rorbu. These houses on stilts in the water used to be the homes of fishermen during fishing season. The modern versions are still as sturdy and surrounded by waves and seaweed but the interior is completely different (Reservations at Destination Lofoten in Svolvær).
