The student body of Coimbras radiates happiness that’s contagious. This atmospheric town is ideal for young visitors who like to go out. Coimbra with a magnificent university is also a cultural highlight – it’s only one of many between the cosmopolitan cities of Port and Lisbon. The convents of Bathala and Alcobaça are part of the UNESCO world heritage, as is the Christian knight’s castle of Tomar. Fátima has become a modern place of pilgrimage. It’s nice to see that nature has not been forgotten: white beaches or the Ria de Aveiro, a lagoon with 60 km2 which was formed by the river Vouga. The colorful boats of the fishermen can be found here. Rice, corn, wheat, and vegetables are grown in the hinterland. The harvests are not always enough to make a living and many farmers are working in one of the manufacturing companies part-time.
