Finnmark

Finnmark

by Marco Polo

Arctic vast below the North Cape.

The north of Norway – extremely icy winds meet harbors free of ice, torrential rivers meet enormous fjords and thousands of calm mountain lakes are compassed by zillions of mosquitoes. That’s Finmark: 48,000 km2, surrounded by the inhospitable coast of the Arctic Sea. The inland is characterized by a sparsely covered plateau where thousands of reindeers try to survive in the winter. The 73,000 inhabitant of Finmark are from all over northern Europe. They have a close relation to the ever-changing nature. Temperatures vary from 25 above to 50 degrees Celsius below zero. The winter storms are too strong for people to leave their homes. In the summer, people bask in the sun on the beautiful sandy beaches and cool off in the Arctic Sea every once in a while, which is about 14 degrees Celsius then. Finmark is very big and there is a lot to discover. The midnight sun can be seen in Alta from May 16th until July 26th, on the North Cape even a few days longer.

I actually went up to Norh Cape. I got there during the night. It was so dark we could be in any other place and we wouldn't know. I camped there (not possible if you don't have the right clothes and a warm sleeping bag), and I had the rendiers coming next to my tent and smelling it and touching it with their horns... It was amazing! The next morning it was full shining, very rare in North Cape. There's actually nothing there, but I was at the northest I had ever been, I had the Artic Sea in front of me, and I was sooo thrilled!
