Forget everything you read about the topography of the Netherlands – Limburg is different. While the landscape is flat as a pancake elsewhere, you can see rolling hills in the most southern province of the Netherlands. An area in southern Limburg is even called ‘Klein Zwitserland’ (Little Switzerland). The mentality of the people is completely different as in the north as well. The mainly catholic people of Limburg are fun-loving, happy connoisseurs – a circumstance that might date back to the Romans, who had their commercial settlements on the river Maas. The province is a gourmet’s paradise. The food is the best of the entire country. The asparagus is as well-known as vlaai, a fruit flan with pudding filling. The region is also known for its excellent beer. The people of the south have been through an eventful history – this area was once French, once Belgian, once German, and has only been a part of the Netherlands for about a hundred years. Never ask somebody from Limburg if he’s Dutch – it’s an insult. To the west of Limburg there is Noord-Brabant with the two cities of Eindhoven and 's-Hertogenbosch. They got mainly one thing in common with the people from Limburg: they love to eat.
