The region is bordered by the mighty Alps in the North, whose foothills with their beautiful lakes head out into the only large plains area of Italy – the Padania. Stretching from Turin to the Adriatic Sea, it is pervaded by the Po River, Italy’s longest river. These fertile plains are home to most of Italy’s industrial settlements. In the South, the first hills of the Apennine Mountains mark the end of the Padania and thanks to great infrastructure and waterways there are many lively cities in this area, free communes founded during medieval times that turned into stately homesteads for ambitious aristocratic dynasties.
