This basilica devoted to Mary was designed by a miracle snow in August, the hottest month of the year in Italy.

Every year on August 5th, the legend of this church's foundation is remembered. On this night in the year 352, the Holy Mother is supposed to have appeared to Pope Liberius and charged him that if he should find snow next morning to build a church on that spot.
