In ancient times Tiber Island was dedicated to Asclepius, the god of healing. The Holy Roman Emperor, Otto III, had the Church of St Bartholomew built on its ruins in around 1000. The Fatebenefratelli Hospital has preserved its medical tradition up to the present day.
