Start your city tour here. The 1st century Roman amphitheatre was badly damaged by an earthquake in the 12th century, so that of the outer wall only four arcades remain standing. The arena may be visited during the day but it only really comes into its own during the famous opera performances. The first such event was a performance of "Aida" to mark Verdi's 100th birthday on 10 August 1913.
