Home to the Papal conclaves, as well as to Michelangelo's legendary Renaissance-style painted ceiling.
The Sistine Chapel is actually the room where the next pope is elected by a papal conclave consisting of the College of Cardinals. That fact is often overshadowed by heavy-hitter Michelangelo's famously beautiful frescoes. Everyone is familiar with 'The Creation of Adam' from various t-shirts of adolescent humor, but Michelangelo's ceiling frescoes are meant to depict nine scenes from the book of Genesis. Though the walls of the chapel were done by other masters of Renaissance art, including Botticelli and Signorelli, the styles blend seamlessly. Overall, he Sistine Chapel may be one of the most beautiful, but religiously-charged art experiences you'll ever have.
