The Sistine Chapel

Home to the Papal conclaves, as well as to Michelangelo's legendary Renaissance-style painted ceiling.

The Sistine Chapel is actually the room where the next pope is elected by a papal conclave consisting of the College of Cardinals. That fact is often overshadowed by heavy-hitter Michelangelo's famously beautiful frescoes. Everyone is familiar with 'The Creation of Adam' from various t-shirts of adolescent humor, but Michelangelo's ceiling frescoes are meant to depict nine scenes from the book of Genesis. Though the walls of the chapel were done by other masters of Renaissance art, including Botticelli and Signorelli, the styles blend seamlessly. Overall, he Sistine Chapel may be one of the most beautiful, but religiously-charged art experiences you'll ever have.

I would recommend to anyone visiting Rome, to go and see the Sistine Chapel which is in the Vatican Museum. If you want to avoid the queue, reserve your ticket online at least 3 days advance. It costs around an extra 4 euros, but it is well worth it.

This little chapel is part of the Vatican tour, and you'll end up in it at some point, craning your neck to the ceiling to see Michelangelo's famous fresco of the hand of God.

It would take months just to properly examine each breathtaking image of Michelangelo's masterpiece. Fortunately, you have your whole life to return. Well-worth the massive lines.
