Viterbo, which is still surrounded by mighty, 5 km long town walls, boasts a tremendous medieval townscape which is dominated by dark-grey Peperino stone. The characteristic features here include the many fountains and the "profferli" steps leading up the outside walls of houses.
Viterbo was a colossal waste of our time to visit. There are dozens, if not hundreds, of better examples of medieval villages in Italy. We saw literally two buildings from the medieval era, and of course the wall still survives. Other than that, there is plenty of industrial scenery to view, and absolutely no restaurants open between 1p and 8p. Do yourself a favor and head east to Orte instead.
is very beautiful with a very well-preserved historic center. From spring to see the medieval quarter of San Pellegrino in flower and in September for the Feast of St. Rosa.
