Sterzing is situated in an enclosed valley into which several valleys feed in the shape of a star. The many castles close to the town indicate the strategic importance it once had. In the Middle Ages they protected the vital trading routes. The "twelve tower" marks the focal point of the historic town centre, which is largely preserved.
