The principal town in the valley is dominated by the ruin of Jaufen Castle dating from the 13th century. The town became famous as the birthplace and home of the national hero Andreas Hofer. At the start of the 19th century, he fought in several battles against the French and the Bavarians to unite South Tyrol with Austria.
