A small cute town in the hearth of Italy
Orvieto is a small town that has to be visited while traveling through the Central Italy. It's a perfect way to spend a cosy afternoon while enjoying the beauties of the city. The city will take you by surprise. First of all, when arriving from Bolsena Lake or Montefiascone by car, at a certain point, you will have a wonderful view of Orvieto on your right side. There is a parking area where you can stop for few minutes and enjoy the view, maybe have a glass of wine (there is a small bar too). Once you reach the city, don't forget that you can't access the city by car, so leave it in one of the parking sites around the city wall. Now you are all set to start discovering Orvieto. As with every Italian town, there are many churches and other places of interest - but three of them just can't to be missed. The Cathedral, a masterpiece of the Gothic period, associated with the Bolsena Miracle and rich in paintings by Beato Angelico. Right on the same town square, starts the Orvieto Underground tour, with 1200 caves underneath the city uncovering the Etruscan Ruins. It's really worth to take a look. And finally, the Saint Patrick (San Patrizio) well: It was built in 1527 to bring water to the city, in case of war or natural disaster. Nowadays it is possible to visit, but you will have to march down--and later up--248 steps!
