Clonmel (Cluain Meala in Irish), in County Tipperary, is the largest inland town in the Republic of Ireland. It is the county seat of South Tipperary County Council, although part of the town is situated across the River Suir in County Waterford. It lies in a valley, surrounded by mountains and hills. The Comeragh Mountains are to the south, while east of the town is Slievenamon. The River Suir flows through the town. The town has an honoured place in Irish history as having braved and withstood the Cromwellian forces which sacked both Drogheda and Wexford. (...) more....
