In Jaipur, you are in the land of “namaskar,” rather than “namaste.” With a thriving Muslim population, women are very conservative and you will be able to feel the Maharaja air about the place. The walls that surround the old city center (in fact, India’s only planned city) is made of stucco painted a pinkish-orange. Amber Fort is one of the most spectacular sites right outside the city, and accessible by auto-rickshaw. Bicycle rickshaws are prevalent in Jaipur; hand-pulled rickshaws have been outlawed.
If you are going to buy something nice for yourself to bring home from India, do it in Jaipur. The whole old city center is one huge marketplace. Whether jewels, perfume, silver, spices or silk, Jaipur has the best of it all; just make sure you are getting what you pay for, and bargain, bargain, bargain like anywhere else in India.
