Tower of London

The medieval Tower of London has a long history, during which it has frequently changed its function. Over the past 900 years, the British and English kings used the fortification as a military fort, an arsenal, a mint, a prison, a residence, and a safe for the crown jewels, among other things.

Today, the tower serves primarily as a tourist attraction, and a very popular one at that. The oldest part and pride of the UNESCO-protected building is the White Tower, which dates from the days of William the Conqueror. The Chapel of St John (1080) inside is the oldest religious building in London.

Through the Bloody Tower, where Richard III had his nephews imprisoned in childhood, connects the outer and inner ring of fortifications. In the Jewel House, the crown jewels of the monarchy can be admired in a more expedited fashion on a conveyor belt.

  • This creepy old castle has existed for centuries and was used by various monarchs to keep prisoners, who would later be executed at the nearby Tower Hill. The ghost of Lady Jane Grey is believed to haunt this place.

On the northern bank of the Thames is the Tower of London, which served as a fortress, armory (stronghouse), royal palace and prison, especially for prisoners of the upper class.

It’s an incredible example of how a city can get modernized without losing its history. The London Tower cohabits in time and space with the skytscrapers of the city.
