Tower Bridge

The famous drawbridge at the eastern end of the City was opened in 1894 and is one of the classic London landmarks. Its name does not refer to the two prominent neo-Gothic towers but the nearby Tower of London on the north bank of the Thames.

On average, traffic over the Tower Bridge is interrupted three times a day for ship crossings. To do this, the two middle parts of the bridge fold up -- a complete opening of the bridge occurs only for large cruise ships or special ceremonial occasions (you can check for upcoming bridge openings at http://www.towerbridge.org.uk).

The top two passageways of the Tower Bridge are accessible for pedestrians and provide a great view of the River Thames and the City. The north tower provides access to the Tower Bridge Exhibition, which includes the old Victorian engine house with its original steam engines.

  • This pedestrian bridge is known as the wobbly bridge by locals because they had to close it down two days after it opened because of its shakiness. They fixed the problem and now it's open and in pretty much constant use.

  • Right next to the Tower of London, this is the prettiest bridge in the city. Great views and easy enough to walk across (wide sidewalks, etc). There are also a few nice pubs on the south side of the bridge (not much except for offices on the north).

The Tower Bridge is a road bridge over the River Thames. It connects the City of London on the north side with Southwark on the south side. It is a bascule bridge built in the Gothic Revival style.

  • A visit to the museum gives you insight on why the Bridge was built the way it was and also a best-of all bridges around the globe. In the end you get to see the steam engines which powered the bridge before you exit the exhibition through the gift shop. Cost is pound 7,- for an adult.
