Popular gateway to the Lake District
Bowness-on-Windermere is situated right on the lake, making boat and canoe excursions, as well as hiking, a breeze to organize. As a result, Bowness can get pretty crowded with tourists, but it's easy to get away once you're out in nature. And if you've got kids in tow, Bowness is a great place to take them. Once the frequent holiday destination of Beatrix Potter in her youth, Bowness is now the location of the popular World of Beatrix Potter. Featuring recreations of scenes from her numerous books, it is an unofficial shrine to Peter Rabbit and Jemima Puddle-Duck. There is also the Lakes Aquarium, one of the few freshwater aquariums in the UK.
