The Whitworth Art Gallery is an art gallery in Manchester, England, boasting about 31,000 items in its collection. The museum is located south of the Manchester University campus, in Whitworth Park.
It was founded with a donation from Sir Joseph Whitworth.
It has notable collections of watercolours, wallpapers and textiles.
In the 1950s, it became part of the University of Manchester.
In October 1995 a Mezzanine Court in the centre of the building was opened. This new gallery, designed chiefly for the display of sculpture, won a RIBA regional award.
One of its most famous works is the marble sculpture Genesis (1929-1931) by Sir Jacob Epstein. (...)
