The healing properties of the chalybeate springs were discovered in 1606 and an elegant spa resort developed from 1735. One reaches the springs via the 200 m long "Pantiles" parade of shops with its beautiful arcades and 18th/19th century houses. There are also fine villas on Mount Sion Street.
