Since the 13th century, a stone bridge with 24 arches has spanned the River Torridge in Bideford where in the Middle Ages there was a lively trade in wool and tobacco. There is a statue commemorating Charles Kingsley as his novel "Westward Ho!" which originated here gave the nearby village its name.
