Only a train stop away from Brighton City Center and close to Brighton University is the small village Lewes. It is an impressively quiet place with a rich history - surrounded by the beautiful countryside of Sussex, you have the chance to get to know England from another side. Lewes is perfect for a Sunday afternoon trip: You can stroll down the narrow and cobbled lanes, visit Hervey’s Brewery, Lewes’ own brewery from the 19th century or browse the inside of an antique bookshop. The village does not have many sights, and next to small historical buildings, a visit of the Lewes Castle is a highlight. You can climb the stairs and get higher and higher until you have the astonishing view of the beauty of the surrounding countryside. While climbing up the stairs, you can read about the village and there even is a room in which children can dress up like prince and princess.
If you have seen enough from the top of the castle, take some time to enjoy the beautiful castle garden. It is often used as the set for historical films or for musical, theatrical and other events around the year. The castle itself also provides an excellent stage for concerts, outdoor exhibitions and several contests. Once a year, Lewes is crowded by thousands of people coming from all over England to attend the famous bonfire celebrations. It is an attractive event and definitely worth it to come to Lewes.Lewes travel guide by kir.sten is this text outdated?
