Cambridge

More than three million tourists from all over of the world discover Cambridge every year. What makes the city so attractive is the atmosphere of its world-famous colleges and their students. The foundation of the university can be narrowed down exactly to the start of the 13th century. In 1209, an Oxford student was accused of having murdered an Oxford resident. The angry townsmob caught the (innocent, as it turned out later,) student and hanged him. After this, a group of fellow students decided to leave this unsociable place and moved to Cambridge. By 1226, there were so many students that classes were held in churches and private houses. By the end of the 13rd century, the colleges were given land with the hope that the scholars would pray for the good and the souls of the donors. The Peterhouse (1284) was the first college of the university, founded by bishop Ely. The other colleges, among them three exclusively for women, came to existence within the next 700 years. World-famous scientists, artists, philosophers, politicians, and more than 60 Nobel prize winners studied and taught here. Today, the region of Cambridge has become an economically dynamic region by the help of the effective combination of science and industry and shows a high concentration of young IT businesses.
The perfect start to explore Cambridge is a cruise in one of the characteristical punts on the river Cam. Rent one at the Queens Bridge and float along the gardens and college buildings, and pass the Bridge of Sighs, which was built in 1831 and modeled after the Venetian Ponte dei Sospiri.
