Plaza de Oriente

An elegant square, as one would expect in the direct vicinity of the Palacio Real, with equally elegant people. The square was built on the orders of Joseph Bonaparte who was installed as the King of Spain in 1808 by his brother, Napoleon. Visitors can see the foundations of an "atalaya", a watchtower dating back to Moorish times, protected behind glass.

Tip: Find yourself a nice place in a little street café which is facing the palace - beautiful when the sun is shining!
