Eiffel Tower

The Old Lady and me

It's difficult to believe that at first, many Parisians fiercely resisted the construction of the Eiffel Tower. Only when the approximately 1,049-foot-high building -- actually an observation tower for the World's Fair of 1889 -- opened did the protests die down. Today the steel masterpiece, by the French engineer Gustave Eiffel, is not only the most famous thing in Paris but also, with around seven million paying visitors very year, the world's most visited landmark. Until 1930, when New York's Chrysler Building beat it by a little more than 50 feet, the Eiffel Tower was also regarded as the tallest structure in the world.

Forget the lines at the ticket booth and elevators: seeing Paris from one of the viewing platforms of the Eiffel Tower is simply a must. This is possible from the morning until 11 p.m. -- until midnight, during the summer months. On the first and second levels, a staircase will get you fairly far on foot, which cuts down on waiting time and burns calories -- which you can replace at the restaurant 58 Tour Eiffel (Stage 1) and the exclusive Jules Verne (Stage 2). You can get to the top platform at 898 feet high only by elevator -- the view is legendary.

  • Ja, man muss immer anstehen, wenn man den Lift nehmen will. Aber wer gesunde Beine hat, kann auch die Treppen laufen, muss nicht (oder kaum) anstehen und zahlt sogar weniger.

  • Beautiful and romantic; unfortunately, everybody and their mother thinks so, too - this iconic Paris landmark is crawling with tourists. But not even the crazy crowds can detract from this most symbolic of European sights. Great views from the high-up viewing galleries, but the wind can get intense.

  • The quintessential Parisian landmark, the Eiffel Tower is much bigger than you'd imagine. It's fun to take the lift up to the different viewing galleries (the price of your ticket determines how high up you can go) or just hang out on the lawns below (free).

we went on the top by feet, 688 stairs.. but it is very nice. In august there were too many people and to much to wait, as we went by feet we waited only few minuts.

  • One of the best views of the Eiffel Tower is from the Marine Museum. It is a shame that this beautiful vantage point is also used by groups shouting slogans in the name of democracy and freedom of expression.

Initially it was a controversy matter for some people. The Eiffel Tower was built as a presentation of the Universal Exposition in Paris in 1889, with more than 236 million of visitors since the opening. The tower became the emblem of Paris because of its exceptional size and and its easy to know silhouette. (WIK)

No matter how often I visit Paris, every time I see her on the horizon, something happens.... the closer you get, eventually at her feet, you can't help but stop and stare, struck by her beauty. It is impossible, unimaginable, what am I saying, criminal to visit Paris without paying her a visit.
