Notre-Dame Cathedral

The imposing Gothic masterpiece on the Ile de la Cité was built between 1163 and 1345 -- this period also saw its first renovation. Even the facade of Notre Dame, with its transept portals, grotesque gargoyles, and nearly 229-foot-high towers, is a real eye-catcher. Inside, the nave measures 426 feet in length and 115 feet in height, and the magnificent rose window has a diameter of about 32 feet.

The church's square can accommodate up to 10,000 people -- this was the setting of many important events in French history, including the coronation of Napoleon (conducted by himself). During the French Revolution, the cathedral was attacked, desecrated, and declared the "Temple of Reason." The inevitable deterioration set in and seemed impossible to reverse, until Victor Hugo, with his 1831 novel "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" reminded the public of the building's beauty actually brought about its restoration.

  • Known for its beautiful stained glass Rosetta window, this cathedral is not to be missed. You can pay extra and mingle with the gargoyles at the bell tower (which was popularized by Victor Hugo in teh Hunchback of Notre Dam) or visit the vaults below the church. Admission is free.

Really nice and if you walk through the Seine shore the Gothic structure is quite impressive, even more than the main Facade.

One of the bridges leading to the island of Notre Dame is very famous for lovers. The Couples hang a lock (with initials) to the bridge grating. Sweet!

  • One of the most beautiful façades in Paris! Worth it to find out when the kids choir sing/rehearsal; their voices get amazing with the acoustic of the church, a breathtaking experience!
