Lions, rhinoceros, zebras, and many other wonders of the African wilds live in total freedom in a habitat recreated especially for them at the heart of the Languedoc region.
Paul de la Panouse, known as “the Lord of the zoological park”, who also founded the Thoiry Park near Paris, created the Sigean safari park in 1974. It attained the symbolic figure of 10 million visitors in 2007. As Barcelona is just a two hour drive away, the park attracts many visitors from Catalonia. It’s a great place for all the family. It is also an ideal training ground for the amateur safari photographer, who can take part in the monthly photo contest on the park’s internet site. New animals are born here every year. The latest additions were a baby marmoset and an antelope calf. Get your cameras ready! Young children will love the dwarf goats, one of the main attractions. Visit by car The fun way to explore! As you drive along slowly, with your windows up, you will cross the African brush, the Tibetan Bear Park, the Lion Park and the African Savannah, in the company of huge ethereal white rhinoceros, Cape elks, frolicking zebras and comical ostriches. Visit on foot An effortless stroll full of surprises, like that couple of cheetahs for instance, hypnotically pacing backwards and forwards as you observe them from a little bridge above. You’ll also learn how to distinguish an African elephant from an Asian one, discover the African hunting dogs and the gnus, marvel at the baby kangaroos, chuckle at the chimps grooming one another for lice and admire the thousands of pink and white birds on the lake. Watch them eat... You can also watch the animals feeding: the buffalos (9.30 to 10 am), the squirrel monkeys (around 12.30), the pink-backed pelicans (1.30 to 2 pm), the cheetahs and the African hunting dogs (from 4 to 5 pm).
