Schiltigheim (Schiltigheim, and sometimes ʃiltigajm by non-local speakers of French; Alsatian: Schílige, pronounced ˈʃɪlikə; Schiltigheim) is a commune in the department of Bas-Rhin and the Alsace region of Alsace. The name of the communes is often shortened locally, both in French and in the Alsatian dialect, as Schilik (ʃilik).
It is the largest suburb of the city of Strasbourg, and is adjacent to it on the northwest. In the 1999 census, Schiltigheim had a population of 30,841 and was therefore the third biggest town in the Bas-Rhin. In French, its inhabitants are called "Schilikois" ("Schilik" is nickname for Schiltigheim used in the region, as well in French as in the Elsässerditsch dialect).
The town dates back to the 9th century when it was a part of Germany for over 700 years, when it grew around the castle and the church. (...) more....
