Amboise is a picturesque small town, centrally located for exploring the Loire Valley. The town surrounds the Chateaux, which is where Leonardo da Vinci was buried. The Bigot cafe in the centre of town has good light food, including things like scrumptious quiches, cakes, pastries, and chocolates. I had one of the best hot chocolates there, the Grand Maman one, which had an orange flavor and was absolutely luxurious. The Amboise open air market along the Loire on Sundays is well worth visiting for stocking up on fresh vegies, the best of cheeses and breads, just-cooked Paella, and everything else under the sun (including things like lawn-mowers when I was there!).It's not far to Chenonceau, Blois, Chinon, Chambord, Azay-le-Rideau and many smaller ones such as Cheverny. Just driving through the countryside, with it's rolling green fields and vineyards and forests, is worth being there. One way of getting there is to catch the TGV from Paris to Tours (St Pierre des Corps) and hire a car there.
