In a fantastic setting, Avallon rises from a spur of rock. Thanks to this position, which was easy to defend, the area of what is now the town was already settled by the Celts. The Church of St Lazare d'Avallon is still a place of pilgrimage for many and is well worth a closer look, particularly the western door.
