The city has unexpected attractions.
Lorraine's largest city, with its high-profile landmarks from 3,000 years of history, the nested and densely built old town near the picturesque Moselle River, and a busy, cosmopolitan atmosphere, has much to offer. On the beautiful Place d'Armes is the great Gothic St. Stephen's Cathedral (1250-1380), built out of yellow sandstone. The 137-foot-high interior is illuminated by magnificent stained glass windows. In the left transept and the left side of the ambulatory are three glass windows by Marc Chagall (1960). To the northeast, in the Rue Chèremont, is the well-stocked La Cour d'Or Museum, with medieval sculptures and a large collection of old masters.
