The north Karelian town of Ilomantsi is the most easterly in the EU and lies further east than Istanbul. The Orthodox Elias Church is one of Finland's biggest and most beautiful. Karelian treasures, including rare editions of the "Kalvala" epic, are preserved at the Parppeinvaara open-air museum.
