Nurmes, whose churchtower is visible from far and wide, was founded by Czar Alexander II in 1876. The town, with its right-angled street grid is on a peninsula in Lake Pielinen. There are beautiful birch-lined avenues everywhere and some districts still have their original wooden houses.
