The historic part of the city at the narrowest point of the Gulf of Bothnia was destroyed by fire in 1852. This means that the cityscape of the university city, which also benefits from the ferry link to Umeå, has a rather modern feel. You can go shopping, to the museum or visit the nearby islands.
