Between 1422 and 1857, all ships passing through the Øresund had to pay customs duty to the city. The city's resulting wealth can be seen to this day in the form of beautiful medieval timber-frame buildings, the Gothic Carmelite monastery and the state palaces from the Renaissance and baroque eras.
