On a clear day from downtown Santiago, you can see the towering and snow-capped Andes Mountains, but crisp and clear days are less frequent due to excessive pollution in the Chilean capital. Economic growth and increased tourism have made Santiago what it is today, a modern city with bohemian aspects, political slogans daubed on street corners, and memorable barrios. From the eclectic restaurants of the Barrio Bellavista, where poet Pablo Neruda maintained a house, to the hip Barrio Brasil, there is something for everyone. One of the main sites to see in the city center is the Palacio de La Moneda, which was bombed during the 1973 coup d'état. From there the galvanized steel construction of the Mercado Central is within easy reach, and you can dine on some of the best seafood around. The more discerning visitor can head off to one of the many vintners and taste as many wines as possible before hitting the town in one of South America's safest cities.
