The town is famous for its huge palm grove, which was planted by the Moors. Other evidence of Moorish times is provided by the Alcàsser de la Senyoria castle and the chunky La Calaforra tower.
City Elche is the third city of Valencia by population size and resources. A walk through its streets to discover an interesting historical center, witness of past brilliance. It was fortified city of Al-Andalus between the eighth and ninth centuries to the Christians in 1265, however, the original solar city of Elche, La Alcudia, was located just two miles south of the existing urban area, from the Neolithic to the Visigothic period, the city of Helike. This was the era splendor of Iberian culture, which was carved the Lady of Elche. In 209 BC the Iberian city is romanized and in the first century BC acquired the title of Colonia Iulia Augusta Ilice. The past is combined in contrast with the elements of a young and dynamic city, part of the largest palm grove in Europe, making it a unique urban landscape. The Palm Grove, agricultural legacy of Andalusian culture, has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
