Once a byword for all the worst aspects of Mediterranean tourism, Torremolinos has long been surpassed in crassness by other destinations and, if visited off season, can actually be quite pleasant. The local council has done a good job of an overall scrub-up for the town that includes extensive landscaping, pedestrianizing streets and tarting up the 7-km-long promenade. New construction has to adhere to far stricter controls and a grand auditorium stages opera and ballet (which makes a change from karaoke).
