Millions of flowers and a count's family form part of the largest tourist attraction on Lake Constance.
With around 1.25 million visitors every year, Mainau is the largest and best-known tourist attraction on Lake Constance. It was acquired in 1853 by Grand Duke Friedrich I as a summer residence and he created the rose garden containing up to 20,000 roses in 1200 different varieties.
Almost a year ago I was the last time on the island. Just when the tulips were in the beds and in meadows in full bloom. Just a dream. Even if the ships each day bring many visitors to the island, one finds yet again a place where you can relax and enjoy the beauty of the island, with its sea of flowers and the great old trees. This is a place you should visit at any time of year when you can.
