Englischer Garten

Traditional French baroque gardens have a special focus on geometrical shapes and structures symbolizing the taming of nature. English gardens, however, are the exact opposite and look rather natural and wild. In 1792, this English Garden opened its gates and ever since has attracted masses of locals, tourists, joggers, and cyclists alike. It is one of the largest inner-city parks in the world, where people take horse rides, slackline, throw frisbees, do BBQs, rent paddleboats, or enjoy the sun next to the “Kleinhesseloher Lake”. But there are other attractions, too, which make the Munich English Garden famous, maybe even a little infamous. One is the small community of nudists who carelessly spend their time at the Schwabinger Bach and enjoy the sun. Curious passers-bys who risk a glimpse are not always rewarded with the view of luxurious bodies. Provided that this doesn’t spoil your appetite, one of the must-haves is to settle down in one of the traditional restaurants, such as the “Seehaus” or the “Biergarten Hirschau” and order a “Weisswurst” with sweet mustard. The most popular beergarden is the one next to the “Chinesischer Turm”. The tower was erected in 1789 and then reconstructed in 1952 after it burned down. Prepare for big crowds and brass bands in the weekends. Other prominent buildings of the park include the Monopteros, a Greek temple built by Leo von Klenze which provides an exellent panorama view all over Munich, and the Japanese Teahouse on the southern end of the park. Even further south, right next to the Prinzregentenstraße, you will find the true highlight of the English Garden: Since the 1970s, this small, fast stream with rapids dares bold surfers to have a go and become an “Eisbach-Surfer”.

  • Ein riesiger Park. Schön angelegt. Der Biergarten am chinesischen Turm ist auch zu empfehlen. Unbedingt Fahrräder leihen oder mit einem Fahrradtaxi durch den Park fahren lassen.

The beauty and care of the park shows how much the Munich citizens love this place. They visit this place after work just to do some sport or just to enjoy an “after office” in the nature. It’s a Munich symbol of life quality..

  • Very lovely park, my guide told me that it was bigger than Central Park. Having been to NYC, this made the garden all the more impressive.
