This colossal construction in Trier remained from the capital of the Roman Western Empire.
The Porta Nigra, erected as part of the former city defences at the end of the 2nd century, is the best-preserved Roman gate north of the Alps. The weather-beaten sandstone blocks were originally only held together with iron clips. The Porta Nigra served as a basilica from the 11th to 19th century.
