King Ludwig I built an ancient villa in Aschaffenburg, "the Bavarian Nice", and it was rebuilt years after the war.
The Pompejanum is the replica, built in 1848, of the "Villa of Castor and Pollux" which was excavated in Pompei. The three-storey building is based around two inner courtyards. Frescoes and mosaics are based on Roman models. The works of art on display are originals from the Munich antique collection.
