Brandenburg Gate

Today the Brandenburg Gate stands first and foremost for German reunification. In the past, the obligatory nostalgic photo opportunity of any Berlin excursion was capable of heating tempers. Built in 1791 by architect Carl Gotthard Langhans, the 65-foot-high sandstone gate on Pariser Platz was Berlin's first neoclassical building. As such, it took on the form of an ancient Greek temple -- specifically Langhans took the Propylaea at the entrance to the Acropolis in Athens as his model. It stands to reason that the famous charioteer at the top represents Irene, the Greek goddess of peace -- the Brandenburg Gate was thus not a triumphal structure but a commitment to peace and democracy.

That didn't stop Napoleon from using it as a triumphal gate in 1806, taking the winged bronze lady along with her four horses (the Quadriga) back to Paris. His victory over Prussia would eventually bring him considerable dishonor. The "tit for tat" was not long in coming: after the successful wars of liberation, Irene was reestablished on its traditional place and upgraded by Karl Friedrich Schinkel to the goddess of victory. Since then, her wand has been adorned by an Iron Cross, a laurel wreath, and a Prussian eagle -- but not during the communist era.

The greatest victory the Brandenburg Gate witnessed was in 1989, when the Berlin Wall fell. Before that, it stood for 28 years on the East German, in the middle of the restricted area. Berlin's landmark has seen turbulent times since then, too: in 1996 the masses of the Love Parade gathered in front of the monument for the first time; in 2006 tens of thousands of soccer fans visited the "Fan Zone" during the World Cup in Germany.

  • A monument with an incredible history. In 1806 Napoleon stole the bronze quadriga on its top, until 1989 the Berlin wall was just in front of it.

Brandenburg Gate is amazing during the day and an incredible show at night. It is almost 30 meter high and it has a neoclassial style which makes it the most emblematic construction in Berlin.
