The Grand Mosque of Dubai Grand Mosque of Dubai stands next to the Diwan. While the 70m/230ft-high minaret tower is visible from a distance, the nine large and 45 smaller colourful, lead-glazed domes dominating the mosque’s appearance are no less striking. The original Grand Mosque, built here in 1900, served as the architectural model for the newer building.
Although virtually none of the mosques in the UAE are accessible to non-Muslims, this magnificent building is an exception. The Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding, an organization founded in 1999 and dedicated to the promotion of Muslim culture, offers guided tours of the Grand Mosque on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Visitors not only gain insight into the hand-crafted details of the interior design, but are also given an introduction to the basics of Islamic practices.
