Washington Monument

by cristina tripwolf

The tallest structure in D.C., the Washington Monument stands 555 ft. tall, a sandstone obelisk rising like a knife to the sky. Upon President George Washington's death, Robert Mills won a competition held a century later to build the memorial in his honor - according to the Washington National Monument Society, the structure should be 'unparalleled in the world,' 'combining stupendousness with elegance' so as to be 'an object of pride to the American people.' The Washington Monument officially opened in 1888, and ever since, visitors have climbed to the top to see views of up to 30 miles.
