Saarlouis was built in 1680 by the Sun King Ludwig XIV as a fortress town to secure the north-east border of France. The ruler liked the town so much that he gave his name to it. As a visitor, you must make sure you go on a walk through the pretty Old Town with its many bars and restaurants.
