The market has expanded and evolved since the 1870s and now consists of a substantial brick building housing the meat and dairy sections and a vast area of open-air sheds, selling fruit and vegetables, clothing and souvenirs. The meat hall has fresh meat, fish and seafood and the dairy hall includes nearly 40 deli stalls selling bread, cheese, sliced meats, pickles, dips and sauces. The sheds can be a good place to find cheap leather goods but generally hold a lot of low-quality, mass-market junk. The food sections, however, are well worth a wander for the friendly banter of the stallholders and extremely tempting sights and smells. There is a food court and there are places in the dairy hall to grab a bite and sit down. There are also entertaining tours focusing on either history or tastes, such as the Foodies’ Dream Tour, Tue, Thu-Sat 1000, $35 including
samples along the way. Bookings essential, call 9320 5822.
