Lamanai Temples

Lamanai Temples

by cristina tripwolf

The second largest Mayan site in the world, translated from Mayan to mean Submerged Crocodile.

Set in lush rainforests near the New River, part of Lamanai's allure is the uniqueness of its location and the lovely 26-mile boat journey that is necessary to get there. Listening to howler monkeys and watching water birds swoop above your head, it's not hard to imagine what life here must have been like centuries ago. There are only a few temples open to the public, but they differ from other ruins because of a layering technique used in building - generations of Mayans built on top of their ancestor's temples rather than destroying them and starting over. The High Temple offers a stunning view of the surrounding rainforest and river.
